Introduction to Portrait Drawing

For Adults and Teens

Learn to draw a portrait from a live model. Rickey Schwed will lead you step by step, teaching you how to draw a portrait like a master. Utilizing compressed charcoal on paper, you will gain an understanding of faces, as well as learn methods, discover materials, and learn how techniques like shading can be used to trick the eye into making a 2d surface appear 3d. You will gain basic knowledge and build the confidence to attend "drop in sessions" that will further enable you to work on improving your drawing skills. Anyone can be taught to draw, there are concrete methods that can be practiced and learned. Rickey Schwed will demonstrate techniques that will drastically improve your ability to capture proportions, perspective, and even a realistic likeness, while guiding you to complete your own portrait from a model. All materials are included in the class fee ($25).

Rickey Schwed has been drawing portraits since she could hold a pencil. An accomplished portrait artist since the 1980’s, Schwed currently resides in Marblehead, and is a juried “Artist Member” of the Marblehead Arts Association as well as the Salem Arts Association. Schwed was also recently on the MHTV show, Imagination, as a portrait artist.  She exhibits her work locally, and has been featured in publications such as the Jewish Journal, the Marblehead Reporter, and the Lynn Item. Rickey Schwed takes limited commissions, painting portraits as well as local landscapes.
